Asus announces new 7-inch and 10-inch MeMO Pad tablets

Asus took the wraps off two new tablets at Computex today. The 7-inch MeMO Pad HD 7 is a slight refresh over the Nexus 7 tablet and it has a price tag to give Apple’s iPad mini a run for its money. Priced at $129 (approx Rs 7,000) for the 8GB model and at $149 for the 16GB model, the MeMO Pad HD 7 is one affordable tablet, even without looking at the specs sheet.

The tablet is powered by a Cortex-A7 quad-core processor and the IPS display has a 1280x800 resolution. The major difference over the Nexus 7 is the presence of the 5-megapixel camera on the back. There’s a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera as well. The HD 7 also features stereo speakers, which come with ASUS SonicMaster audio technology. Just 10.8mm thick and 302g, the MeMO Pad HD 7 has a lithium polymer battery that Asus claims lasts for up to 10 hours with 720p video playback. The tablet will be available in four colours — black, white, pink and green. Both the 8 GB and 16GB models come with microSD card slots.

Asus also announced the 10-inch MeMO Pad FHD 10, powered by the new Intel Atom Z2560 processor. The display has a full HD resolution (1920 x 1200) and is also an IPS panel, like most of the products unveiled by the company today. It also features the SonicMaster audio technology for enhanced output. Additionally, the tablet has a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, which can do 1080p video recording.

In terms of connectivity, the HD 10 gets support for Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, GPS and GLONASS navigation. There’s Miracast to wirelessly connect the tablet to a Wi-Fi-enabled TV or projector. The tablet will be available in 16GB or 32GB storage configurations and both capacities also feature a microSD card slot. With a ‘micro-weave finish’ on its body, the tablet is available in blue, white and pink.

Both tablets will get a protective TransCover with microfibre interior, which folds into a kickstand to prop up the tablets.
